Teej 2026: What It Means and How It Is Celebrated in America

Teej is the festival of red saris, singing and fasting — and for many Nepali women in America, the one day a year the whole community gathers in full colour.

What Teej is

Haritalika Teej honours Parvati's devotion to Shiva. Married women traditionally fast for their husband's long life and wellbeing; unmarried women fast wishing for a good partner. It falls in Bhadra — August or September.

How the day runs

• Dar — the feast the night before, eaten together, often the most social part of the whole festival
• The fast — a full day, traditionally without water, though many now keep a lighter fast and that is widely accepted
• Red — saris, bangles, pote; the visual signature of the day
• Songs and dance — Teej songs are frequently about the hardships of women's lives, which is why the festival can be joyful and pointed at the same time
