Receiving Money in Nepal from the USA: What Families Should Know

Not legal advice. Immigration rules change and every case differs. This explains the general process only — always check the official source linked below, and speak to an accredited representative or attorney before acting.

Most guides on this subject are written for the person sending. This one is for the family receiving — because the delays and the paperwork almost always land on the Nepal side, and the person in America usually cannot help from there.

The three ways it arrives

MethodUsual speedWhat the recipient needs
Bank depositSame day to one working dayAccount details, and the name matching the ID exactly
Mobile walletMinutes to a few hoursA registered wallet in the recipient's own name
Cash pickupMinutes, during branch hoursCitizenship certificate or passport, and the control number

The name problem, which causes most delays

The name on the transfer must match the recipient's official ID. Nepali names are frequently written differently across documents — a middle name included on one and omitted on another, or a different transliteration of the same name. The transfer is then held for verification, and the sender in America gets no useful explanation.

Before the first transfer, send a photo of the recipient's citizenship certificate or passport to the sender so the name is entered exactly as it appears there. This one step prevents the majority of held transfers.

What can delay a transfer

Questions worth asking before the money is sent

The scam to know about. Nobody legitimate asks a family in Nepal to pay a fee to "release" money that has been sent. If a caller says a transfer is held and needs a payment to clear, it is fraud — check directly with the bank or the provider, using a number you looked up yourself rather than one you were given.

Frequently asked questions

How long does money from the USA take to reach Nepal?

Mobile wallets usually arrive within minutes to a few hours, bank deposits the same day or the next working day, and bank wires one to three working days. Holidays in either country can add delay.

Why is my transfer from America being held?

Most often the name on the transfer does not exactly match the recipient's citizenship certificate or passport. Larger amounts and first-time transfers to a new recipient are also checked more closely.

Do I have to pay a fee to receive money in Nepal?

Legitimate providers do not ask the recipient to pay a fee to release money that has already been sent. If someone demands that, treat it as fraud and verify directly with the bank using a number you looked up yourself.
