Finding a Room to Rent in the Nepali Community (USA)

Updated 17 August 2026 ยท Hamro App

Finding a room is the first real problem almost every Nepali faces after landing in America โ€” and the listings that matter are the hardest to find. The big rental sites are full of apartments needing credit history, a co-signer and a twelve-month lease. What most people actually need is a room, this month, with people who speak their language.

Those listings exist. They just do not live on the big sites.

Why Nepali room listings are hard to find

They circulate by word of mouth, in group chats, and in community apps โ€” because they are usually a spare room in a family home rather than a managed building. That has real advantages: no credit check, flexible terms, and neighbours who understand your festivals. But it also means the listing never reaches a search engine.

Where rooms are actually being posted

There are 211 room posts live in the Hamro App community feed right now, alongside 197 job posts. Rooms concentrate in the states with the largest Nepali populations โ€” which is also where shared housing is easiest to find at short notice:

What a room typically costs

AreaShared roomPrivate room
New York / New Jersey$500โ€“$800$900โ€“$1,400
Washington DC / Maryland / Virginia$450โ€“$700$800โ€“$1,200
Texas (Dallas, Irving, Houston)$400โ€“$600$650โ€“$1,000
Midwest / smaller cities$350โ€“$550$600โ€“$900

Ranges reflect what is commonly posted in community listings and move with the season โ€” demand peaks in August and January when semesters begin.

Ask these before you send any money

Never send a deposit before you have seen the room โ€” in person or on a live video call. Anyone refusing a video call before payment is the single most common rental scam in our community. A real landlord with a real room will always show it.

Posting a room? Say the things people search for

If you have a room to fill, the listings that get answered are the specific ones. Include the city and state, the monthly rent, whether it is shared or private, what is included, the nearest transit or highway, and one photo. A listing saying "Room available, message me" gets far fewer replies than one that answers the obvious questions up front.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a room in the Nepali community?

Most listings never reach the big rental sites โ€” they circulate in community groups and apps. Hamro App organises them by state so you can see what is genuinely near you.

Do I need credit history to rent a room?

Usually not. That is the main practical reason people look for a room in the community first โ€” a private landlord renting a spare room rarely runs a credit check, where a managed building almost always will.

What is a fair deposit?

One month is normal. Two months happens but is worth negotiating. Anything more, before you have seen the room, deserves caution.
